NHRTL remains endeared to former US
Senator Bob Smith for his many many years of faithful courage for the mothers
and unborn babies. We appreciate his legislative initiatives
listed below and implore current and future legislators to live up to his fine
example.
• The Right to Life Act was introduced to protect the right to
life of each born and preborn human person in existence at fertilization.
• Sen. Smith wrote the original Partial Birth Abortion Ban in 1996. This bill
would ban a grossly inhumane procedure used late in pregnancy to end the life
of a child in the process of being born.
• Sen. Smith supported alternatives to embryonic stem cells for
research and has supported legislation that would provide federal funding for
research using adult stem cells only.
• He passed an amendment which would encourage the National Institute of
Mental Health to conduct a study on post abortion syndrome. The Senator also
wrote to Sec. Thompson asking him to study post abortion syndrome and received
a letter from him saying that he would be issuing grants this summer to study
this issue. Finally, he introduced S. 2271, the Post Abortion Support
and Services Act of 2002, which is a bill to study the physical and emotional
repercussions of abortion.
• Sen. Smith offered an amendment in 1999 which called for greater disclosure
for those organizations that buy, sell, and use fetal tissue for research.
He also passed an amendment that directed the GAO to investigate the federal
government’s involvement with fetal tissue.
• He introduced S. 1984 with Senator Jim Bunning, a bill to provide grants to
health clinics so they can purchase ultrasound machines. When women see their
unborn child on these machines, 90 % of them choose life.
• He introduced S. Res. 209 which commended Secretary Tommy Thompson for his
regulation allowing State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) benefits
to be made available to unborn children and their mothers.
• Sen. Smith cosponsored several important bills:
* The Child Custody Protection Act
* The Pain Relief Promotion Act
* Legislation to ban human cloning
* Legislation to increase adoption
tax credits
* A bill to limit RU 486, the human
pesticide
Woefully, too many so-called "pro-life" politicians only "acknowledge" a
pro-life perspective when pressed. Sen. Bob Smith, thankfully, was
pro-active and promoted pro-life values at most every chance and occasion.
Sen. Bob Smith endeavored to serve all the people of New Hampshire, both born
and unborn, so we express our gratitude to him and his team of pro-life staff.
